I think 1987 must have been the last year of the eighties in terms of the impact or influence of the seventies punk movement. It’s also the last year before SAW launched their bid for total domination of the charts; in point of fact we see the start of this during ’87 with that man Rick Astley. His first single Never Gonna Give You Up was a number 1 smash and fortunately his second single (a dreadful cover of the Nat King Cole classic When I Fall In Love – honestly why do they think that it’s OK for semi-talented amateurs to tackle such songs?) was prevented from making the top spot by first T’Pau(!) and then PSB with their own cover of the Elvis classic Always On My Mind. And before you ask, there are no double standards here, PSB actually added something with their cover, something which poor befuddled Rick couldn’t. Miaooooooooooow!
