FIFA World Cup 1982 – Spain

The 1982 Football World Cup, held in Spain was won memorably by Italy as they won their 3rd title, defeating West Germany 3-1 in the final, with goals from Rossi, Tardelli and Altobelli being answered by a goal from Paul Breitner.

It was also the finals which saw

  • the infamous challenge by German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher on Frenchman Patrick Battiston
  • winners Italy struggling to escape from their first round group – they drew all three games
  • the West Germans beaten by Algeria in the group stages
  • an unfit Kevin Keegan missing a golden chance to beat Spain and qualify for the semi finals
  • the epic game between Brazil and Italy in the second group stage, which saw a 3-2 win for Italy and qualification for the semi-finals
  • and of course, Arconada – ARMSTRONG!
