1982 was the year of the Falklands War, the break-in to Buckingham Palace by Michael Fagan and the launch of 2 new television stations – Channel 4 and the Welsh Language S4C (a clever contraction of WaleS4Cymru). Laker Airways collapsed, Pope John Paul II became the first Pope to visit Britain, the IRA bombed Hyde Park and Regents Park, killing 8 and wounding 47 and Gibraltar’s new pedestrian link to mainland Spain was opened.
