Damned (The) – The Shadow of Love

The second single taken from Phantasmagoria was written by the classic Jugg / Scabies / Vanian / Merrick line up (sorry Captain).  Released on 10 June 1985, I bought it on 5 July as it hit its highest position of number 25 in the UK singles chart.  This was the thing with The Damned – they produced great music that wasn’t appreciated by the masses – certainly in terms of their singles.  It was if you’ll pardon the cliche a cult following.  As far as my taste in music went, I was eclecticism personified – my small collection of Damned singles sits, perhaps uneasily, with genuine mainstream stuff like… well you know… it’s all here

If you look at The Damned’s chart history, only 1986’s cover of the 1968 hit Eloise (written by Paul Ryan, sung by twin brother Barry) managed to break into the top ten; in fact nothing other than Eloise and their first single, 1979’s Love Song managed to trouble the top twenty. The single’s artwork, by The Leisure Process, is based upon that of Phantasmagoria, with photography by Bob Carlos Clarke.   The model is the model is former Vogue model Susie Bick, wife of Nick Cave.
