Saturday 23 April 1988

It was a super sunny Saturday as we set off down the M54 / M6 into Aston, Birmingham to watch promotion chasing Aston Villa play relegation threatened Shrewsbury Town.

As was common in the day, us football fans of the away variety were treated pretty much like cattle.  Even those of us from a small town such as Shrewsbury were herded from car-park to turnstile and then forced to plead with the denizens of West Midlands Police to open up another pen on the away end at Villa Park as the squeeze became just a little too much as the rest of Town’s largest away following of the season attempted to join those of us already inside.

The match was a bit of a disappointment as Villa won by a single goal.  After that it was a long wait to be let out before trudging wearily back to our coaches before our mercifully short dash back up the M6 / M54 and home.
