Eintracht Frankfurt – UEFA Cup Winners 1980

Ah! The dear old UEFA Cup. Sometimes seen as the poor relation to the European Cup, well der, and the Cup Winners’ Cup this was still quite a nice piece of silverware.

Played between teams that had performed strongly in the European leagues the previous season, each league would have a certain number based on their relative performances.

This season, West Germany had no less than 5 entrants. As luck would have it, the provided all of the semi-finalists. Even the fifth team, Kaiserslautern, had made it to the quarter finals.

The West German shake down eventually yielded Eintracht Frankfurt as winners. They defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach on away goals after the two legs finished 3-3 (3-2 and 1-0) on aggregate. In the semi-finals, Frankfurt had beaten Bayern and Mönchengladbach had beaten Stuttgart.
