Season 1981-82 saw a four horse race of sorts as Liverpool held off the challenge from Ipswich Town, Manchester United and Spurs. The Reds’ winning margin of four points from Ipswich perhaps belies the fact that they were languishing in twelfth place after their 1-3 defeat at Anfield by Manchester City. As it was, they had to wait until their penultimate fixture – a 3-1 home win versus Spurs, for whom Glenn Hoddle had opened the scoring after 26 minutes – to clinch the title. On 51 minutes Mark Lawrenson equalised before Dalglish and then Ronnie Whelan wrapped things up. Meanwhile, the Tractor Boys were busy suffering a home reversal by a similar score to Nottingham Forest. Peter Davenport picked up at least a brace for Forest whilst Alan Brazil scored Town’s consolation goal.
