Eric Bristow, the Crafty Cockney, wasn’t John Lowe. This made him persona non grata in our house for my Dad, a keen arrow chucker himself, was a keen fan of John Lowe. And as for my Mum’s opinion on the matter…
Along with young Steve Davis, Eric Bristow was the 80s master of the two sports which have at times been dismissed as glorified pub games. Darts in particular had real struggles with its image. You only have to think back to the Not the Nine O’Clock News skit with Gryff Rhys Jones and Mel Smith as Dai Fat-Belly-Gut-Bucket and Tommy Even-Fatter-Belly Belcher respectively to see what some people thought of darts as a sport.
But enough already. Eric Bristow was World Champion in 1980, 1981 and then for three years in a row between 1984 and 1986. Eclipsed since by Phil Taylor, Bristow was the powerhouse of 1980s darts.
